Major Contact Lens Manufacturer

PROBLEM:

To automate a very labor intensive operation of adhering a lens disc to a metal block. Once attached, the assembly goes to a precision lathe operation for the cutting of the concave contour.

SOLUTION:

To utilize a twelve station rotary indexer with several automatic stations which involves two vibratory feeding stations for the feeding of the blocks and lens.

SPECIAL CONSIDERATIONS:

The stainless steel blocks required heating to 175 degrees before the adhesive could be applied. This was done utilizing a resistance welding head.

The amount of adhesive applied had to be consistent within + 5 degrees.

After cooling, the assembly must withstand a rotational force test.

EQUIPMENT FURNISHED:

12 station rotary indexing system with high heat resistance fixtures.

Safety interlocking guarding system per OSHA standards.

Allen-Bradley SLC-500 control system.
